Cat Lovers Will Understand

Obama coulda gone to Ramstein sans media and photo op, John Edwards really was in the hotel-- in the room with the woman reported to have given birth to his child-- and I still don't have a caretaker for my Mom.

And while all this has been going on a contractor in Brooklyn  was locked up in a psych ward for four days after he smashed into walls in three apartments trying to rescue a cat.

Auyup! You read that right. He is reported to have told the mental health police as they carted him away.

I'm not crazy, doctor. There really is a cat in my wall.

But guess what? There really, really was.

According to the NY Post, that collector of all things bizarre in the greater New York environs, it all started with a mischievous kitty named Rumi who put his head a hole in the wall of a condo undergoing renovation in Carroll Gardens.

Poor Rumi, the hole opened on a 30-foot shaft and he fell to the bottom.

The contractor, Chris Muth, had been watching Rumi for a friend and panicked when he went missing.

He couldn't reach the cat from the first apartment - even after enlarging the hole.

So the super, Doug Steiner, gave Muth permission to make a small hole in the wall of another unit.

But, Steiner said:

He opened up all the walls. I said, 'What the hell are you doing? The owner's going to flip out.'

Muth cared only for catching Rumi. Unable to catch him from that second hole, he broke into a third apartment, and again started smashing into the walls.

According to the Post:

Steiner had as much success coaxing Muth out as Muth did with Rumi.

So the super called the cops - who shipped Muth to a local psych ward.

Rumi remained in the catacombs of the condo - a former church.

Again, according to the Post in typical  NY Post style:

And the shrinks decided Muth was suffering from bats in his belfry.

They are not kidding. The hospital report on Muth declared:

He had a bizarre delusion [he] was trying to save a cat of his friend

But it all ended happily.

Muth finally convinced the doctors that he wasn't a wacko.

And Rumi, tired of his 15 days in solitary, let himself be caught by professional cat rescuers using a fishing-pole-like, professional cat-catching  device. Muth told the Post:

After 60 hours stuck down there, I thought the cat was going to die. Otherwise I wouldn't have panicked like I did.I can fix holes, but I can't bring a cat back to life.

I wish this guy was running for office somewhere. He'd get my vote!

It was Gizmo.  She died a few weeks ago, sadly.  She made it to 17, not bad for a cat I would say.

She was hella fat.  She would break into the catfood bag, eat and purr, then fall asleep.  She was the happiest creature I've ever known.

And hella fat.

I had a cat that lived to be 21 (died when I was 23, so we'd grown up together totally).  That was 5 years ago, and I still miss him sometimes, as lame as that sounds!

Not lame (none / 0)

I have no idea how old Sarah Bernhardt Cat was when she died, but I was 21 and my stepfather found her as a kitten frozen to a grate on the University of Minnesota campus in the middle of winter the same year I was born, so she must've been around that age.

She was the meanest ol' cat, but we loved her regardless.  I knew she meant business when she climbed on my tummy to nap, and her claws dug into me whenever I tried to move.

The new cat, however sweet-natured, just doesn't have the same personality.

Re: Cat Lovers Will Understand (none / 0)

Tajii is neither soft nor lovable, he is demanding, hates to be touched except at certain times, will not under any circumstances cuddle and prefers other furry animals to humans. He is also a skilled hunter and every  day it seems I am rescuing some creature from his clutches in the house. He also loves to scratch his nails on all the window screens. In short, he is an obnloxious little fart who I would dearly love to palm off on some other unsuspecting human. But he sleeps with my mother and will rub against her. Lets her pet him too. go figure, huh?

Re: Cat Lovers Will Understand (2.00 / 1)

This reminds me of the time my Mom panicked when Fluffy wouldn't climb down from the tree. The fireman obliged her and rescued the poor cat, but after Mom had carried the kitty back to the house he told us kids that he would treat us all to ice cream if we could find a cat skeleton in any tree in the neighborhood within the next 2 years.

I really doubt that a cat skeleton would have ended up in any wall in the apartment building that was torn up by that panicked cat lover in the story.

Cat lovers ought to be the experts on cats.

Sadly, no.

We had four cats when I was growing up.  Mom loved 'em, Dad tolerated them.  The deal was, we could have cats so long as Dad got to name them.  As a result we had pets with names like:

*Skinny Shit Bag
*Goober Face
*One-Eyed Jack

and

*Stupid Bob

The latter two were both female.

Welllll, I have a cat in a tree story for you. My butchie-a big white fluffy one--climbed a tree so high in Montana he was a white speck in the sky. And his meows which floated far and wide were attracting a huge flock of predators wo would do fly-bys, tongues lolling lasciviously. So along with the fire department some hunters showed up. I thought at first they were going to shoot butchie down :) Now, Butchie had climbed so high they couldn't reach him with an extended fireman's ladder. So what did they do. They got a can of tuna out, slimed some on the ladder from top to bottom and sent it aloft. Gues who climbed down the ladder lapping tuna all the way :)

When my grandparents were building their house, a skunk somehow got trapped in their basement and could not be removed due to the state of the construction.  I think it ultimately died (I'll have to revisit that story with my grandmother), but at least it didn't spray the house, which is what everyone thought would happen.

Re: Cat Lovers Will Understand (none / 0)

I totally understand this guy.  A few years ago I was living in a city in the developing world (the exact country will remain nameless, but it's one which regards cats as being little different from squirrels or raccoons).  So anyway, I came to befriend a kitten who showed up one day on my porch.  She grew up, disappeared for several weeks, then showed up very pregnant.

Uh oh. I then made a rookie mistake.  Took her in during the pregnancy and decided I'd raise the kittens for six weeks, get them used to people, and  then adopt them out to expats and sympathetic locals.  Long story short, when the time came for me to give them away I found NO takers.  The thought of putting them outside broke my heart.

So, long story short, I found an excuse to take the long plane ride back to the States, paid off someone to fake the customs documents (though no US laws were broken), found homes for them through friends of friends, and they're now living on farms in New York and South Carolina. Totally crazy, but what could I do?

He could have stepped back, assessed the situation, and found another, less destructive way to rescue the kitty.

I'm not sure I'd elect him for anything, at least not an office which required a cool head.

I have an amusing 'kitty' story. (none / 0)

My old roommate went for a swim at night.  As she was walking back in the dark, a little kitten came up next to her.  Being a cat lover, she was cooing and asking it if it was lost (you know, like we talk to babies) and she bent down to pet it.  She said it's fur was really scruffy and course and she figured it must be a stray.  As she got back to the condo, under the lights she looked down and saw that it had followed her.

Except it wasn't a kitten...it was a baby skunk.  :D
